Code of Conduct
APPE Code of Conduct
Approved by the APPE Board of Directors, August 3, 2024
Purpose and Scope
The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) seeks to create a collegial, respectful, and constructive environment for the free exchange of ideas among scholars and practitioners in practical and professional ethics and related disciplines. To this end, “‘participant” in this Code of Conduct refers to anyone present at any APPE-affiliated events, including Association members, staff, contractors, vendors, and all other attendees.
Expectations for Members and Participants
All participants are expected to abide by this Code of Conduct in all venues, meetings, and events sponsored by or affiliated with the Association, including ancillary events and official or unofficial social gatherings. The Association expects members and attendees to maintain commitments to each of these values:
- Respect for Persons: The Association is committed to upholding the principle of equal dignity for all individuals, irrespective of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, socioeconomic status, political beliefs, or any other characteristic. Participants are expected to share in this commitment by fostering an inclusive and welcoming community for all.
- Free Inquiry: The Association is committed to upholding principles of free inquiry and the respectful exchange of diverse ideas and perspectives. We champion open discourse, encouraging members to explore, challenge, and innovate on ideas in the context of a community that welcomes difference and disagreement even in cases where such disagreements may cause discomfort.
- Collegiality: The Association takes seriously the importance of collaboration and community to the project of free and open inquiry. Participants are expected to engage with fellow participants and their ideas with charity, constructiveness, and intellectual humility.
